The chief executive of the peak body supporting Victorians with autism has slammed the NDIS as too focussed on costs over people's needs.

It comes after the ABC revealed hundreds of people with autism and intellectual disabilities have had their NDIS funding slashed because the payments were found not to represent "value for money".

Speaking to Virginia Trioli on Mornings, chief executive of Amaze Jim Mullan questioned the level of understanding by the assessors.

"Lots of arguments will be presented within that Agency around 'this is public money that we're spending, what do we get for our dollar?' Well that requires a level of insight and understanding that I'm not sure is evidenced in that assessment process," he said.

In a statement, the federal government said funding for individuals can change based on independent assessments, but insisted overall funding for the NDIS has increased by $26 billion.
