Every now and then I get to thinking on the subject of why there is such a massive increase in the number of diagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorders. Particularly when I read or see something on the subject. There is the fact that there is more awareness and better methods of diagnosing, however that may account for some of the increase, but not all.

At the moment the DSM-4 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders ) criteria is being used to diagnose and categorise Autism Spectrum Disorders, within the Spectrum there are currently 2 main categories – Autism and Aspergers.

A child with Autism can be very prone to meltdowns in public and unfamiliar places. Meltdowns can be described as a tantrum or fit of rage as the child may be confused or stressed due over loaded sensory inputs or an unfamiliar place and situation. So how do you handle such a situation?
