A 12-year-old boy with autism has been found safe and well in Western Sydney more than two days after he went missing.

Hussein Al Mansoory was last seen running from Auburn Memorial Park heading towards the intersection of Station Road and Rawson Street, Auburn, about 10:30am on Saturday.

He was found at a medical centre in Auburn by a member of staff, NSW Police Superintendent Simon Glasser said.

The medical centre was just 100 metres away from the Auburn police station.

"One of the staff members thought to check the stairwell, which is exactly what we we're asking, and as a result, we found him," he said.

Superintendent Glasser said Hussein had been taken to hospital for a check-up, but on all accounts, "he's doing well" with no reported injuries.

"His family were told immediately that we'd found him and that they were ecstatic and attended the scene straightaway," he said.

Hussein was discharged from the Children's Hospital at Westmead on Monday evening.

Superintendent Glasser said 200 volunteers assisted in the search for Hussein over the last two days, including 100 SES volunteers, as well as "numerous hundreds of members of the public" assisting in the search.

When he was unable to be located, he was reported missing to officers at the Auburn Police Area Command, kickstarting the search.

NSW Police confirmed that Hussein, who lives with Down syndrome and is non-verbal, was found in Auburn about 12:40pm on Monday.

Earlier on Monday, Superintendent Glasser said police were "throwing everything at" the search, which had reached its third day.

A large multi-agency search was carried out on Sunday, with officers from Auburn Police Area Command assisted by the NSW State Emergency Service, officers from the Public Order and Riot Squad, PolAir and the Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit.
